Cancun, Mexico

On August 22-25, 2002, Fran and I took a little vacation to Cancun. I had always said that I wouldn't go to Cancun because everything was so pre-packaged, but it turns out that's the best way to relax... This was one of my few "true" vacations, where we just spent time on the beach, reading, relaxing, sleeping... I didn't even take all my camera equipment. Just a little point-and-shoot.

The hotel (Oasis Cancun) was modest, but we only needed it for sleeping, so it was good. The view from our room was actually the lagoon side, not the sea, but it was very nice. What was beautiful was the beach right outside the hotel.

The vegetation around the hotel and the whole hotel zone is really neat. So many palm trees had coconuts, although most were still green.

On two different nights, we saw turtles coming out from the sea to lay their eggs. Yes, me being a dumb tourist, I got too close and the turtle did a 180 degree turn back into the sea. It was barely coming out of the surf so hopefully it tried again later.

Downtown Cancun was good for shopping. Everything in the hotel zone is way overpriced. Not that the city was particularly cheap.

We went snorkeling to Playa Maroma, about a 45 minute bus ride south of Cancun.

This is my first try with those underwater cameras. Not too bad, as long as it's near the surface.

 Back home.
